He is a keyboardist, guitarist, music director and composer who, although being largely self-taught, performed and gave lessons on the solo guitar alongside playing keyboards.
He was a member of The Medium Wave Band in the 1970s as well as various other bands such as Finn MacCuill.
In the 1981 he became a member of the successful Celtic rock band Run Rig and remained with them for five years until 1986. Also in 1981 he became a co-founder of Theatre Alba where he directed and/or wrote most of the music for many of their works, often being staged as Edinburgh Fringe productions.
Once Theatre Alba’s name was becoming known he worked alongside the co-founder, Charlie Nowosielski, as the resident music director and composer at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh, Midlothian, in 1986. He remained there for five years before taking on the same positions at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast in 1991.
He left the Lyric Theatre in 1993 and concentrated on performing, arranging and composing for other theatrical companies, artists and groups, exhibitions and the film industry with some of his music now kept in the Scottish Theatre Archive. He wrote music for the 1997 film version of Macbeth.
No stranger to the studio he has been heard as a performer, arranger and/or composer on recordings including Rocky Roads by Avalon, Coming Home by Fiona Kennedy, [On the West Side] by Donnie Munro and Heartland by Run Rig.
