Chaman, Clive (5th September 1949-Present)

He is a bass player and songwriter born in Trinidad and Tobago who started out his career when he became a member of the Latin/R&B club band Romeo Z in the mid-sixties, where his older brother, Stan, was the band leader and later the drummer Gerry Day.

The band was noticed by the composer and conductor Stanley Myers and he took them on to record “Kaleidoscope” for the soundtrack of the film of the same name in 1966.  The next year they recorded and released the single “Come Back, Baby Come Back”.

He moved to the UK in the late 1960s and by 1969 he had appeared on the London Blues album by Ram John Holder and when the 1970s came around he was set to tour with Cat Stevens but instead worked with the guitarist Jeff Beck when he became a member of The Jeff Beck Group in 1971.  He remained with them until they split up in 1973 and then went onto become a member of Hammer led by the drummer Cozy Powell.  That same year he was a musician with the singer Bobby Tench on Now Hear This by Junior Marvin’s Hanson and became a member of Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express.

The following year, in 1974 he and Bobby Tench, the keyboardist Max Middleton and the drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie became members of the band Hummingbird.  They went on to release three albums and then he toured the US with the singer Linda Lewis in the mid 1970s.

During the early 1980s he worked as a musician on the Morrissey-Mullen album Badness which was released in 1981.  Three years later in 1984 he worked with the guitarist Raven Ohtani an his release Raven Eyes.

He performed on many recordings during the course of his career and a selection of them include Moving Home by Rod Argent, The Best Of… by Brian Auger, Beckology by Jeff Beck, Chris Darrow by Chis Darrow, Cosmic Wheels by Donovan, Nigel Lived by Murray Head, Diamond Nights by Hummingbird, Rough and Ready and Jeff Beck Group by The Jeff Beck Group, Back Street Crawler by Paul Kossoff, Not a Little Girl Anymore by Linda Lewis, Looking Over My Shoulder by Chris Rainbow and Bug City by Lenny White.

He retired to Miami, Florida.
