Campo, Helen

Flautist and piccolo player who attended the New England Conservatory and Queens College and studied under Julius Baker, John Heiss, John Krell, Robert Langevin, Murray Panitz, Robert Stallman, and Keith Underwood.

Groups with whom she has worked include the American Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the New York City Ballet, the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic, the New York Pops, the New York String Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Queens String Quartet, Single Tree and the Westfield Symphony Orchestra.

William Thomas McKinley dedicated his “Duo for Flute and Piano” to her and she and pianist Thomas Stumpf delivered the world premiere at Weill Recital Hall on 22nd May 1984.

On 7th June 1985, she performed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Flute Concerto in D” with the Summer Symphony of Queens in Rathaus Recital Hall at Queens College.

She was back at Rathaus with the Queens String Quartet for a recital of Mozart’s “Flute Quartet in D” on 29th May 1988.

On 22nd March 1989, she was one of several musicians who performed “Minotaurus” by Linda Bouchard and Friedrich Durrenmatt at the Alternative Museum in New York.

She and keyboardist Phillip Bush interpreted Ross Moyer’s “Romance” at Weill Recital Hall on 6th and 7th June 1992.

On 11th December 1999, Singletree collaborated with narrators Jennifer Farbar and Spencer Holst in a rendering of “Balanced Boulders” by Holst and Roger Trefousse at Westbeth Home to the Arts.

Helen has also been busy on Broadway, appearing in the orchestra pit for productions of CamelotDance of the VampiresJane EyreThe King and IThe Sound of Music, and Wicked.

On the big screen, she has performed on the soundtracks of DoubtJoe Goulder’s Secret, and King David; On the small screen, she has appeared with the Muppets as an evil Pied Piper and as—what else—a flautist, on Nickelodeon’s Wonderpets!.

In the field of music education, she has offered private instruction and served as a guest artist at the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts.
