Buchman, William

He is a bassoonist born in Canton, Ohio, who studied at Brown University and earned his BSc in physics magna cum laude in 1987. He continued his studies in Germany at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with a DAAD fellowship. He changed his subjects completely when he returned to the USA and entered Yale University School of Music to study bassoon performance followed by the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

He became a member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and after two seasons became a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1992. In 1996 he became Assistant Principal Bassoon and when touring with the CSO from 2007 to 2014 performed as Principal Bassoon. The Los Angeles Philharmonic invited him to tour and perform with the orchestra as a guest musician in 2008.

As a chamber musician he has performed and/or toured with artists that include Emanuel Ax, Daniel Barenboim and Christoph Eschenbach and with ensembles such as Music of the Baroque, Chicago Symphony Winds, Chicago Pro Musica and Chicago Chamber Musicians.

As a soloist he performed at the Mostly Mozart Festival in 1998 and debuted as a soloist with the CSO in 2002. Other solo performances have been with ensembles from DePaul University and Music of the Baroque.

At the 1990 Gillet Competition of the International Double Reed Society he was a first Prize winner and as a participant in music festivals, he has played at the Eastern Shore Chamber Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music festival and Saint Bart’s Music Festival.

In the field of musical education he has been the bassoon coach at the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, has been a faculty member of DePaul University School of Music since 1998 and presents master classes nationally and internationally.
