Brown, Christopher

Bassist, composer, double-bassist and educator who attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan and studied with Larry Hurst.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Detroit Symphony, the  Pittsburgh Chamber Soloists, the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

In summer 1996, he gave a series of master classes at various conservatories in Beijing, China.

He appeared at the Alexandria Festival of the Lakes in 2011, where he performed his own transcription of Kurt Weill’s “Cello Sonata”.

Recordings on which he appears include:  Baroque Trumpet Concertos and Trumpet & Orchestra by Sergei Nakariakov; Mstislav Rostropovich Plays Cello Works and Vivaldi/Tartini/C.P.E. Bach:  Cello Concertos by Mstislav Rostropovich; Copland:  Appalachian Spring by Hugh Wolff; and, Trumpet Works by Gary Bordner.

In the field of music education, he has taught at the University of Minnesota School of Music.

He is also a published author and businessman:  He penned Discovering Bows for the Double Bass and his business, The Bow Broker, has done exactly what its name suggests, buying and selling bows around the world.
