Broadbent, Nigel (1952-Present)

Violinist from Newent, Gloucestershire, who attended the Royal Academy of Music and joined the London Symphony Orchestra in 1979.

In 1990, he and Marjorie Dunn co-founded Broadbent & Dunn Limited. They published his composition “Cumulus” for horn and piano, and his arrangement of “Solo Preludio” from “Partita No. 3 for Violin” by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The LSO were joined by pianist Yefim Bronfman and soprano Elizabeth Watts on 27^th May 2012 at the Barbican for a concert of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 3” and Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 4”.

On 31^st May 2012, they offered up Alban Berg’s “Chamber Concerto”, again with Yefim at the keys, and Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1” (“Titan”).

Gil Shaham was the guest soloist when they proceeded through the Mahler cycle with his “Symphony No. 5”, preceded by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Violin Concerto No. 5” (“Turkish”).

Recordings on which Nigel appears include: Bach to Brubeck, Classikhan, Holst: The Planets, Music of Hope, Pergolesi—Stabat Mater and Symphony No. 1 Inspired by the Lord of the Rings by Johan de Meij with the LSO, Corazon Herido by Isabel Pantoja, Epiphany by Vince Mendoza, Fresh Aire 8 and Renaissance Holiday by Mannheim Steamroller and John Adams: A Flowering Tree.

He can also be heard on the soundtracks of The Dark Crystal, The Empire Strikes Back, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

He retired from the LSO in 2017 after 38 years and moved to Provence, France.
