Clarinetist from Oakland, California, who started playing when he was eight. He attended Juilliard and San Jose State. His teachers included Joseph Allard, Gervase de Peyer, Gary Gray, and Mordechai Rechtman.
Groups with whom he has worked include the Be-Bop Tango Orchestra, the Berkeley Orchestra, the Bremerton Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony, the Long Beach Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Los Angeles Opera, the Occidental-Caltech Symphony, the Pacific Classical Winds, the Santa Maria Philharmonic and the Santa Monica Symphony.
In 1995, he participated in the Juneau Jazz & Classics Music Festival.
He played to a pair of SRO audiences at the Hollywood Bowl in the summer of 1999 as the soloist on Artie Shaw’s “Clarinet Concerto”.
In March 2000, he gave Joan Tower’s “Clarinet Concerto” an airing at Pomona College, where he teaches.
He and Catherine Del Russo, David Riddles and Joseph Meyer performed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante for Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn” with the Santa Monica Symphony on 13th March 2005.
From 17th March through 2nd April 2006, he and cellist Cecilia Tsan, pianist David Wolff and violinist Tereza Stanislav provided accompaniment for Exiles in Paradise by Constance Hauman at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, California.
He delivered the world premiere of “Concerto for Winds” by David Newman with the Long Beach Symphony in 2007.
On 25th May 2008, he premiered David’s “Music for Clarinet and Orchestra” with the Santa Monica Symphony.
He teamed up with cellist Roger Lebow and pianist Robert Edward Thies for an all-Brahms affair in the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at Claremont McKenna College on 15th September 2010. Their program comprised the master’s “Clarinet Sonata in E flat major, Op. 120, No. 2”, “Clarinet Trio, Op. 114”, and “Drei Intermezzi, Op. 117”.
In February 2012, he took part in the Pasadena Schubertiade at Neighborhood Church which featured Franz Schubert’s “Octet in F major” and “Quintet in A major, D. 943” (“Trout”).
Recordings on which he appears include: Always and Forever by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; Cristal: Glass Music Through the Ages by the Emerson String Quartet and Dennis James; Exquisite: The Artistry of Malcolm McNab with the Be-Bop Tango Orchestra; Harps and Angels by Randy Newman; The Movie Album: As Time Goes By by Neil Diamond; Parthien 6-9, Parthien 10-14 and David Moritz Michael: The Water Journey by the Pacific Classical Winds; and James Newton: Sacred Works by various artists.
He can also be heard on the soundtracks of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Anastasia, At Sachem Farm, Avatar, Battle for Terra, Bruce Almighty, Constantine, Dreamer, Food, Inc., Instinct, Matrix Redux, Miracle at St. Anna, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Mystery Men, Signs, The Terminal, Terminator 3, Titanic, Uncorked, War Horse, and X-Men II.
Gamers may have heard him whilst playing Resident Evil 5 or Spider-Man 2.
He founded the Ariel Ensemble Jerusalem (also referred to as the Aryeh Ensemble) and the Long Beach Symphony chamber series, Sounds & Spaces.
In addition to teaching at Pomona College, he featured in the instruction book Clarinet Masterclasses and edited another education tool, Daily Studies for the Clarinet by Joe Allard.
