Bognar, Gyorgy (1970-Present)

He is a cellist born in Szombathely, Hungary, who studied in his hometown before taking further studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria.

He has worked with Capella Savaria, the Orchestra of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, the Peter Lehel Quartet, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, who he joined in 2000.

On 14^th October 1999, he was the soloist when the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra interpreted Witold Lutoslawski’s “Five Folk Melodies (Piec melodie ludowych)” and “Grave (Metamorphoses for Cello and Strings)”.

They appeared at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor on 6^th March 2003 when they performed “In the Upper Room” by Philip Glass, “Medusa—Monodrama for Dramatic Soprano and String Orchestra” by William Bolcom, with soloist Catherine Malfitano, and “Symphony No. 49 in F minor” by Franz Joseph Haydn.

On 28^th June 2006, Gyorgy and conductor and violinist Benjamin Hudson shared solo duties when the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra participated in the Safed Music Festival at the Haifa Music Center. Their program comprised Zvi Avni’s “Kadish for Cello and Strings”, Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Concerto for Violin in G minor”, Felix Mendelssohn’s “String Symphony No. 10 in B minor”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Divertimento in F, K. 138” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Chamber Symphony for Strings, Op. 110a” (arranged by Rudolf Barshai after the Russian master’s “Quartet No. 8”.

The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra appeared on the Bernard and Chris Marden Stage at the Raymond K. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts on 27^th March 2007. The concert featured Luigi Boccherini’s “Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 12” (“La casa del diavolo”), Haydn’s “Symphony No. 45 in F sharp minor” (“Farewell”), Mendelssohn’s “String Symphony No. 10 in B minor” and Mozart’s “Concerto No. 12 in A, K. 414”, with Leon Fleisher at the keys.

On 25^th September 2010, the Eight Cellists of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra offered up their renditions of “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1” by Heitor Villa-Lobos, “Barcarolle” from Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach, “The Moldau” from Ma Vlast by Bedrich Smetana and “Swan Lake—Suite, Op. 20” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Eroica Trio interpreted Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano, Op. 56” (“Triple Concerto”) in Foellinger Great Hall at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on 8^th November 2011. The concert concluded with Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73”.

On 8^th May 2012, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra took the stage at Auditorio Santa Ursula in Peru, when they opened with Mendelssohn’s “String Symphony No. 8” and closed with Bach’s “Concerto for Three violins, BWV 1064”.

In the field of music education, he was a guest artist at the Kronberg Academy as part of their violin master classes and concerts which took place from 4^th to 9^th June 2013.
