Birnbaum, Christian (1964-Present)

Artistic director, conductor and violinist born in Saint Polten, Austria, who studied with Georg Mark, Gunter Pichler, Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling and Alfred Staar.

In 1988, he became a member of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Other groups with whom he has worked include Akademischer Orchesterverein, the Baroque Ensemble of the Vienna Symphony, the Brahms Quartett, Consortium Musicum Alte Universitat, the Jeunesse Orchestra, the Slovenian Philharmonic, the Vienna Conservatory Chamber Orchestar, Wiener Concert-Verein, Wiener Kammerorchester und Wiener Mozartorchester.

On 31^st May 2004, the Choir of the Universitatkirche, baritone Wolfgang Holzmair, soprano Christa Schwertsik and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra gave the world premiere of Kurt Schwertsik’s “Fioretti per San Francesco” at the Universitatkirche in Vienna, Austria.

Wiener Concert-Verein teamed up with violinist Moon Kyung Lee at Grossen Saal des Gasthauses Andreas Maurer in Grosswiekersdorf on 10^th June 2007 for a performance of Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, H. VIIa.I”.

In 2008, Akademischer Orchesterverein performed “Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Eroica Trio interpreted “Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C major, Op. 56” (“Triple Concerto”) by Ludwig van Beethoven in Foellinger Great Hall on 8^th November 2011. They reprised this concerto on 14^th November 2011 at Lincoln Center in New York.

On 9^th December 2012, Akademischer Orchesterverein, Chorvereinigung Schola Cantorum, Consortium Musicum Alte Universitat, bass Gunter Haumer, soprano Cornelia Horak, tenor Jorg Schneider and mezzo-soprano Rita Lucia Schneider joined forces at Grossen Musikvereinsaal for Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem.
