Barnes, Derek

He is a cellist born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to a musical family where his father, Darrel Barnes, played viola with the Detroit Symphony and is a Professor of Violin, Viola and French Horn and his uncle, Robert Barnes played viola with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and graduated in 1991.

He went on to perform with the New Y9rk String Orchestra and the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra and was Co-Principal Cello of the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia. His wife Meichen Barnes, who he often appears with, is the Associate Concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia (previously Concerto Soloists).

In 1995 he became a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra and has since performed as a soloist and chamber music musician.

As a soloist he has performed with the Anderson Symphony, the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Muncie Symphony and the Tanglewood Center Symphony. He has also performed as a guest musician with Orchestra Concordia.

As a chamber musician he played on the TV broadcast Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood and given performances with artists that include Sarah Chang, Christoph Eisenbach, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Isaac Stern.

A participant in music festivals he has taken part in the Congress of Strings, the Encore School of Strings and the Taos School of Music summer festivals. He was a Leonard Bernstein Fellow in the Tanglewood Fellowship Program and has been a member of the string faculty of the Philadelphia International Music Festival.

Recordings he has performed on include Fear of Icicles by Barnz and Peter Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.
