Arron, Ronald (19??-2023)

Violist from Chicago, Illinois, who studied with his father, Samuel Arron, who was a violin instructor. He furthered his training with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and attended Northwestern University, from whence he earned a B.M.E.

In 1966, he joined the Army Strolling Strings, which were based in the nation’s capital and frequently performed in the White House.

Other groups with whom he has performed include the Arron Chamber Ensemble, with his son, cellist Edward Arron, the Berkshire Opera, the Florida Symphony, the Harmonie Ensemble, the Naumburg Orchestra and New York Pops, for which he served as principal viola, the Richmond Symphony, the Santa Fe Opera, the Stamford Symphony Orchestra, and the String Symphony Trio in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was the assistant principal viola with the Cincinnati Symphony for eighteen years and was with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for twenty. In 2005, he retired, although he has been busy performing chamber music ever since.

On 4th February 2005, he performed with “Colleagues in Concert” in Bruno Walter Auditorium. The program comprised “Adagio in E flat, D. 897” (“Notturno”) by Franz Schubert, “Quartet in G minor, K. 478” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and “Quintet in A minor, Op. 107” by Joachim Raff.

He and violinist David Chan and pianist Jeewon Park teamed up on 30th April 2006 for a recital at Christ Episcopal Church in Bronxville, New York. Their recital included Antonin Dvorak’s “Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 90” (“Dumky”), Paul Schoenfield’s “Café Music”, and Franz Schubert’s “Adagio & Rondo Concertante in F major, D. 487”.

On 18th March 2007, they reunited for a concert in the same venue that featured “Five Pieces in Folk Style, Op. 12” by Robert Schumann, “Piano Quartet No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 87” by Dvorak, and “Sonata in A major” by Cesar Franck.

They were joined by horn player Julie Landsman on 24th February 2008 for an afternoon recital of Johannes Brahms’ “Trio in E flat, Op. 40”, Mozart’s “Piano Quartet in E flat major, K. 493”, and Richard Strauss’s “Andante in C major”.

Ronald closed out 2009, 2010 and 2011 by performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg concertos as part of Bargemusic’s New Year’s Eve celebrations at Fulton Ferry Landing in New York.

On 21st June 2012, he and violinists Haroutune Bedelian and Lindsay Deutsch and cellist Katherine Schultz performed Dick Hyman’s “Quintet for Piano & String Quartet”, with the composer at the keys, at the Siletz Bay Music Festival.

In the field of music education, he served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and the Congress of Strings.
