Smith, Angela Anderson

She is a bassoonist, also known as Angela Anderson Smith, who earned her Bachelor of Music at the University of New Mexico in 1988 and in 1991 earned her Master of Music from the University of Southern California.

She performed as Second Bassoon at the San Jase Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Principal/Second Bassoon at the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra and in 1997 she became a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

As a chamber musician she has been a member of Temple University’s faculty members’ Conwell Woodwind Quintet and the Network of New Music and is a frequent performer in the Philadelphia Orchestra Chamber Music Series.  She has also commissioned new chamber works.  As a soloist she has given performances with the Lower Merion Symphony and the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra.

A participant in music festivals she has been Second Bassoon at the Midsummer Mozart Festival Orchestra and has appeared at the Music Academy of the West Summer Festival and Yale Summer School of Music and Art.  She was also a prize winner at the Carmel and Coleman chamber music competitions.

Recordings she has performed on include Peter Tchaikovksy: Symphony No 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.

In the field of musical education she has been a teacher at Rutgers University, Southwest Texas State University, the University of Santa Clara and the University of Texas at Austin.  Since 1999 she has been on the faculty of Temple University’s Esther Boyer College of Music and Dance.  She has also given master classes nationally and internationally.
